SMTP Gateway Engineer (Proofpoint) - Senior Consultant/Manager (f/m/d)

• Administer, maintain and optimize enterprise email infrastructure, including Mail Transfer Agents (MTA), Mail Delivery Agents (MDA), SMTP gateways, and secure mail gateways;
• Manage and troubleshoot complex mail routing and mail flow environments, including SMTP routing, policy-based controls, relay configuration, and hybrid email architectures;
• Configure and maintain secure email transport, including TLS enforcement, certificate management, relay controls, and anti-abuse protections;
• Implement and support email authentication and security technologies, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, S/MIME, PGP, and DNS-based authentication mechanisms;
• Monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot email delivery issues using message tracking, SMTP transaction analysis, and email header investigation;
• Administer and fine-tune anti-spam, anti-phishing and anti-malware solutions, including false positive/negative analysis and vendor escalation management;
• Manage email reputation and deliverability, including blacklist remediation and optimization of business-critical email services;
• Develop and maintain PowerShell and scripting automation for operational tasks, reporting, provisioning, and mail flow management;
• Collaborate with security, network and infrastructure teams and support Incident and Change Management processes, following ITIL/Application Management best practices;
• Provide operational support and technical expertise for enterprise messaging platforms, ensuring service availability, compliance, and performance, while contributing to email platform modernization, security enhancements and cloud integration initiatives. 

• Minimum 5+ years of experience administering and supporting enterprise email systems and messaging infrastructures;
• Proven experience with enterprise-grade MTAs, MDAs, SMTP gateways, or secure mail gateways;
• Strong expertise in SMTP protocols, mail routing, hybrid mail environments, mail relays, and secure mail transport, including TLS, certificates, and encryption;
• Strong knowledge of email authentication and encryption technologies, including SPF, DKIM, DMARC, S/MIME, PGP, and DNS records (MX, TXT, SPF);
• Hands-on experience with anti-spam, anti-phishing and anti-malware solutions, including spoofing investigations, IP reputation management, and blacklist remediation;
• Strong experience in mail flow analysis and troubleshooting, including SMTP transaction debugging, email header analysis, and email deliverability;
• Strong PowerShell and scripting skills for operational automation, log parsing, reporting, provisioning, and mail flow automation, with an understanding of certificate/key management and firewall/proxy interactions with SMTP traffic.
